Equipped with an international airport and port, Chennai as one of the four metropolitan cities of India namely Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkatta, enjoys the advantage of global connectivity.Its proximity to Singapore, Sri Lanka and other South East Asian countries acts as an impetus to the industry and businesses here. Chennai stole a march over other cities as the cost of living was low and the city has abundant supply of skilled labour and Chennai's cost of living was very close to Tier II cities of India and the lowest among metropolitan cities. In Chennai lots of job opportunity not only in IT but also in many other core companies like Hyundai ,TVS , Ford, Samsung and Nokia.
It already has an established base of traditional manufacturing industries like equipment, electrical etc. and is even referred as automobile capital of India owing to its huge production capacity of automobile parts and accessories. It was Chennai where the major IT companies of India had started their initial operations. It offers a vast pool of skilled, and English speaking manpower, that is a primary requirement of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies also Build-up in Chennai has all the ingredients to knock other High Tech cities. Chennai has R&D's of major Auto makers. A Tremendous support of present and past governments to the IT industry had made it possible for Chennai to become a favourite destination. Recently Chennai garnered the attention of Various MNC’s as Tamil Nadu Govt has signed 13 MoUs worth Rs 17,583 crores , Out which six have already commenced operations and has provided employment for 1.42 lakh people. A survey indicates that Chennai will host the maximum number of software professionals in the country in three to five years. Chennai is already a favourite destination of largest or the second largest development centre of the top six software services exporters in the country. Chennai is not just a base for India top software giants like TCS, Wipro, Infy and Cognizant but also a base of emerging competitors like MindTree, Mastek, Polaris, Patni, Hexaware and Tech Mahindra that are escalating at a hectic pace along the east coast.
TCS, India’s largest software services exporter with headquarters in Mumbai, has its largest development base in Chennai and employed over 23,000 people in more than six centres. Company is developing Siruseri campus which after completion provides employment to about 21,000 people whereas wipro is providing employement to about 10,000 people in Chennai only and decided to Manufacture a Development centre in next 3 years that will having a seating capacity of 35,000 peoples. However Infosys plans to establish a world’s largest development centre in Chennai having seating capacity of about 25,000 people. In Case of Cognizant Tamil Nadu accounts for over 40 per cent of its global headcount and 50 per cent of personnel in India. As of December 2007, Cognizant had 22,000 professionals based in either Chennai or Coimbatore, out of the 55,000 worldwide. Satyam have around 9,000 people in the city and increased by 6,000 more in the next two years.
Tech Mahindra, the country's sixth largest software exporter and second largest solution provider to the global telecom industry has now enhanced its presence in Chennai by setting up a new 1.2 lakh sq ft development center which will seat 400 professionals in the first phase with plans of adding 1000 people in the next 18 months located at Mahindra world city in Paranur .The company will also service global Telecom Equipment Manufacturers & Telecom Services Providers from this center.
Chennai is emerging as a hottest destination not only for IT companies , Cell phone major Motorola decided to invest around Rs 172.4 crore in manufacturing plant in Sriperumbudur near chennai, which is spread over 2, 70,000 sq ft. This will be Motorola’s first manufacturing plant in India and the second largest outside United States. Plant has manufacturing capacity of about 12 million handsets and 6,500 base terminal stations annually. However other cell phone majors like Nokia has already set up its operations and Samsung is also in the process of establishing a facility in Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
Tamil Nadu has received till date, at least 37 IT special economic zones (SEZs) are expected to be built by private developers in the next few years, many of them for software companies planning dedicated campuses. 11 dedicated software parks being set up by state agencies and 220 IT parks sanctioned by the state IT department.
